Where it all started...
2012 - from humble beginnings in an old family home...
The story of The White House began in 2012 when, as a 20-year-old with big dreams, I decided to turn my family home in one of the most challenged parts of Arusha into a hostel. With no investment or loans, I learned through trial and error how to make it work. Using income from guest bookings, I made small but meaningful improvements to the house. Slowly but surely, The White House became more than just a home—it became a welcoming space for travelers.
Hosting Travellers from around the World
2012 - 2019
Over the next seven years, we grew, one step at a time. As the hostel evolved physically, our reputation soared, and we became the go-to spot for backpackers in Arusha. Travelers from all corners of the globe came through our doors, and we were honored with various TripAdvisor awards along the way. By 2019, The White House wasn’t just a hostel—it was a community, a place where friendships were made, and memories created.

A New Home
2019 - The new and improved White House of Tanzania Hostel in Arusha
In 2019, we made a big move to a new, larger property in Arusha—a fresh start for The White House of Tanzania Hostel. This new space allowed us to grow even further, adding cozy outdoor areas, a restaurant, a bar, and seven boma houses. Like everyone in the tourism industry, COVID-19 hit us hard, but we persevered, determined to keep The White House spirit alive. We’ve come a long way since that first family home, and this new space is a reflection of our passion and hard work.
Zanzibar here we come!
2024 - Tropical Island Paradise
In 2024, we took an exciting leap and expanded to Zanzibar—a tropical island paradise. We acquired a very rundown property and began the tough but rewarding process of renovating it into what is now The White House of Zanzibar Hostel. It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re so proud to have brought The White House spirit to one of Tanzania’s most stunning destinations. Hosting guests in both Arusha and Zanzibar is a dream come true, and we’re excited for what’s to come.
